The HaiCo Shareholder

HAIDA CITIZENS AS SOLE SHAREHOLDERS

The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) was formed in 1974 when a group of Haida leaders saw the need to organize and represent Xaayda • Xaadée Haida citizens politically. Over the course of the past 40 years, the CHN has evolved into the governing body of the Haida Nation, primarily focused on addressing Haida title and rights.

The elected council obtains its mandate directly from Haida citizens at the Annual House of Assembly. The Constitution of the Haida Nation establishes the governing structure of CHN and every three years, Haida citizens elect the President, Vice-President, and regional representatives that comprise the Council. Regional representatives are elected for: Gaw Tlagée Old Massett, HlGaagilda Skidegate, Kxeen Prince Rupert, and T’agwan Vancouver. There are 14 representatives in total. CHN represents Xaayda • Xaadée Haida citizens as the sole HaiCo shareholder.

For more information on the CHN history, governance, and current news visit the CHN website.

The Haida Nation is the rightful heir to Haida Gwaii. Our culture is born of respect; and intimacy with the land and sea and the air around us. Like the forests, the roots of our people are intertwined such that the greatest troubles cannot overcome us. We owe our existence to Haida Gwaii.
