Welcome Richard Smith

Haida Gwaii, October 16, 2026 — Haida Wild is pleased to welcome Richard Smith from the Kuun Laanaas Clan to the team as our new Haida Wild Operations Manager, effective September 14, 2026.

Richard lives in Gaw Tlagée Old Massett with his wife, Courtney  Smith (née Bell). He is the son of Charlotte Marks and the grandson of the late Ethel Jones. Deeply connected to Xaadáa Gwáay Haida Gwaii and its fisheries sector,  Richard brings a strong combination of operational, fisheries, and seafood-processing experience to Haida Wild.

Richard spent 15.5 years dedicated to the Council of the Haida Nation's Haida Fisheries Program. Richard began in a seasonal role and started out as a diver and watchmen supporting fisheries field operations and helping collect valuable information that contributes to fisheries management and stewardship. Through hard work and dedication, he progressed into full-time positions.

Over time, Richard transitioned from field-based work into more supervisory, management, and administrative responsibilities. His experience managing programs, coordinating operations, working with crews, and supporting reporting and compliance requirements has provided him with a well-rounded understanding of both the operational and business sides of fisheries work.

In addition to his fisheries background, Richard has significant seafood-processing experience. He spent several years working at the Omega processing plant in Gaw Tlagée Masset, where he worked on the production floor and assisted with quality control activities. This experience gave him valuable insight into seafood handling, processing standards, product quality, and the importance of efficient operations throughout the seafood value chain.

Richard joins Haida Wild with a diverse skill set, strong local knowledge, and a commitment to supporting Haida participation in the fisheries economy. He will be mentored by our Acting Haida Wild Manager to develop into his new role and continues building on the strong foundation already in place.

Please join us in giving Richard a warm welcome to Haida Wild and the HaiCo Group of Companies. We are excited to have him on the team and look forward to the experience, leadership, and perspective he brings to the organization.
